There has been an increase in complaints of odors in the vicinity of the Quarry Landfill this week. Crews continue to make adjustments to the Sidewall Odor Mitigation System and the Landfill Gas Collection System to curtail the release of odors. Additionally, crews are adding soil to areas where settlement has occurred along with conducting normal maintenance activities.
The City also received several inspection reports this week from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) for the time period of 7/1/2023 through 6/30/24 that noted a non-compliance issue with a probe in the interior of the landfill property but on the edge of the closed 498 landfill. The readings from the probe in question are not static, and the methane readings have occasionally risen above the lower compliance levels over the time period of the reports. The probe is not located near the perimeter of landfill property as stated in the DEQ inspection report, and the City is working diligently with our engineers and DEQ to fix the probe issue and to prepare a compliance plan.
