They City has made significant progress with remediation projects at the Bristol Quarry Landfill in 2025. Those projects include beginning the installation of a new permanent flare as well as an emergency generator to operate critical equipment during a power outage. In an effort to pretreat leachate prior to discharge, two new equalization tanks were installed. The City is also working on the renewal process for its Title V air permit, which is required every five years by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ). Additional cleanouts were also added in the landfill piping system to help remove buildup allowing for more efficient operation. This process is similar to a cleanout system for residential sewer systems, but on a larger scale. Crews stayed busy on a weekly basis rebuilding pumps within the landfill gas system, improving the Sidewall Odor Mitigation System (SOMS), and spreading hundreds of tons of soil throughout the year to address areas affected by settlement. We are appreciative of everyone's patience and support as we continue this work into the New Year.
